Best Cloud Development Environments for AI Coding Agents 2026

Recommendation: GitHub Codespaces suits short agent runs on a GitHub repository, and Claude Code cloud or Codex cloud suit checking on one vendor's agent from a phone at no extra machine cost. Oyren Codespaces suits runs that last days, with several vendors' agents on one Linux machine and a public URL for the running app.

A coding agent on a laptop stops when the lid closes and shares the laptop's files and keys. A cloud development environment moves the agent onto a machine that keeps running. The options fall into three groups:

  1. General cloud dev machines: GitHub Codespaces and Ona provide a Linux machine with an editor, and the developer brings the agent.
  2. App builders with a built-in agent: Replit combines the agent and the hosting.
  3. Vendor cloud agents: Claude Code cloud and Codex cloud run one company's agent on that company's machines.

Oyren Codespaces sits between the first and third groups: a Linux machine with several vendors' agents ready to run.

Which environment fits which job

Mind map of five coding-agent jobs and the cloud environment that fits each: GitHub Codespaces, Claude Code or Codex cloud, Replit, Ona and Oyren Codespaces

  • Short runs on a GitHub repository: GitHub Codespaces, using the 120 included hours a month.
  • Checking on an agent from a phone: Claude Code cloud or Codex cloud, on a plan already paid for.
  • A web app built and hosted without a terminal: Replit.
  • A private network with central governance: Ona.
  • Several agents on the same files for days, with a URL for the running app: Oyren Codespaces.

GitHub Codespaces

A codespace is a Docker container on a GitHub-hosted virtual machine, opened in the browser, in VS Code or with GitHub CLI. Claude Code, Codex or any other agent CLI installs the same way it does on a laptop.

GitHub's billing page lists $0.18 an hour for 2 cores, $0.36 for 4, $0.72 for 8, $1.44 for 16 and $2.88 for 32, plus $0.07 per GB-month of storage. A GitHub Free personal account includes 120 hours of compute and 15 GB-month of storage every month, counted with a usage multiplier equal to the core count.

A codespace stops after 30 minutes idle by default, configurable from 5 to 240 minutes, and the same page gives a maximum lifetime of 12 hours regardless of that setting. Stopped codespaces are deleted after 30 days of inactivity, and the retention period can be set anywhere from 0 to 30 days.

Ona (formerly Gitpod)

Ona sells to companies. Its home page describes "the Enterprise software factory", running in the customer's own VPC with network control, and offers "one governed way to run Ona, Codex, and other agents". The pricing page shows a contact form and no self-serve price. Ona joined OpenAI's Codex team when the acquisition closed on 10 August 2026.

Replit

Replit's pricing lists Core at $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, with $20 toward model usage. Pro is $100 a month, or $90 billed yearly, with $100 of model usage, 10 parallel agents and database rollback of up to 28 days. Machine specifications are not published. Replit's iOS and Android apps create, share and publish web apps from a phone.

Claude Code cloud and Codex cloud

Claude Code cloud sessions run on Anthropic-managed VMs and are available on Pro, Max and Team plans, with "no separate charge for the cloud VM"; usage counts toward the plan's limits. A session starts from claude.ai/code, the Code tab in the Claude app, the desktop app or claude --cloud, and several sessions run in parallel. An idle session stops and its VM is reclaimed. Reopening it restores the conversation history but not background work that was still running.

Codex cloud gives each task its own workspace, which keeps working while the developer's computer sleeps. Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans, and cloud tasks share the plan's usage allowance. On a phone, existing environments open in Codex; creating a new environment needs the web or desktop app.

Both run one vendor's agent per session.

Oyren Codespaces

List price per running hour: GitHub Codespaces 2 core $0.18, 4 core $0.36, 8 core $0.72; Oyren Small $0.174, Medium $0.258, Large $0.348, X-Large $0.516

An Oyren Codespace is a Linux machine with VS Code in the browser, a terminal, tmux and passwordless sudo. Claude Code, Codex CLI, opencode, Cursor CLI, Antigravity and Qwen Code run there, each agent in its own tmux window, so several agents can work side by side on one checkout. The agents sign in with the developer's own accounts or API keys. Every Codespace has a public URL that points at the port of a running app.

Rates come from oyren.ai/plans at 10,000 credits to the dollar. Pro costs $2.99 a month and Max $5.99 a month, both billed yearly, and both take 10% off Codespace time. One purchase covers one hour up to 30 days, in whole hours. A purchase of 7 days or more is 10% off and a 30-day purchase is 25% off, combined with the plan discount, and stopping early refunds the unused hours. At the Free rate, a 30-day Small run comes to 939,600 credits ($93.96).

A snapshot keeps installed tools, dotfiles such as ~/.claude, and repository state including uncommitted changes, and a new Codespace can start from it later. Snapshot storage is billed monthly.

The limits are free usage, machine size and phones. The Free plan includes 2,500 credits once, about 1.4 hours on a Small machine, where GitHub includes 120 hours every month. The largest Oyren size is 8 vCPU and 32 GB, where GitHub goes up to 32 cores. There is no Codespace phone app, and the Oyren iPad app is for PDFs. Model usage is separate, so the limits of the developer's Claude or ChatGPT plan still apply.

Agent differences are covered in Claude Code vs Codex vs Gemini CLI, and Oyren vs Replit compares Oyren with one app builder in detail. The Codespaces page describes the machine, and a Codespace launches from the workspace list.
